Trump Introduces New Fine for Migrants – Nearly $1,000 Per Day

The administration of Donald Trump plans to introduce new sanctions targeting illegal migrants. Those who have received a deportation order but remain in the United States will face a fine of $998 for each day they stay in the country, Reuters reports.
This measure could be applied retroactively – up to five years. This means potential debts running into millions of dollars.
Reuters has seen internal documents that detail the mechanism for imposing the fines. In addition to the fines themselves, the documents stipulate asset seizures in cases of non-payment.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the measure aims to strengthen control over the deportation system. Trump has stated that the previous system has long been ineffective.
Approximately 1.4 mln people, who already have deportation orders but remain in the US, are at risk.
Such fines have appeared in previous legislation but were rarely enforced. The Trump administration intends to revive this tool as part of its anti-migration agenda.
