Kazakhstan has announced the launch of CryptoCity, a pioneering pilot project aimed at integrating cryptocurrency and blockchain technology into everyday life. Introduced by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the Astana International Forum on May 29, 2025. CryptoCity represents a major step in the country’s strategy to become a regional hub for digital innovation and financial technology (fintech).

«We are planning to create a pioneering pilot zone called CryptoCity where cryptocurrencies might be used for purchasing goods, services, and even beyond,» President Tokayev stated to an audience of world leaders, economists, and tech innovators.

Building a Crypto-Enabled Economy

CryptoCity will serve as a real-world testing ground for using cryptocurrencies in daily transactions, including shopping, service payments and possibly government interactions. The project is central to Kazakhstan’s digital transformation roadmap, which focuses on diversifying the national economy, attracting foreign investment and strengthening technological infrastructure.

As many countries implement strict regulations on digital assets, Kazakhstan is charting a different path, one that fosters responsible experimentation within a regulated crypto environment. The goal is to explore the practical applications of blockchain and decentralized finance (DeFi) without compromising financial oversight or economic stability.

National Vision for Digital Leadership

President Tokayev’s address highlighted the broader context of the initiative. Alongside CryptoCity, Kazakhstan is investing in AI development, a national supercomputer, and academic partnerships with leading global institutions. These efforts reflect the government’s ambition to transform Kazakhstan into a Eurasian hub for high-tech industries, including clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and smart governance.

«We are making significant progress in digital transformation, reflecting our desire to become an IT hub in Eurasia,» Tokayev said.

CryptoCity as a Model for the Future

If successful, CryptoCity could become a model for other nations seeking to integrate cryptocurrencies into national economies. The pilot zone will offer valuable insights into how blockchain solutions can enhance financial inclusion, improve digital infrastructure, and create a more flexible and transparent economic system.

By blending innovation with regulation, Kazakhstan is positioning itself as a global leader in crypto policy and blockchain implementation. As the CryptoCity project unfolds, it will be closely watched by policymakers, investors and tech entrepreneurs worldwide.
