In London, Tottenham Hotspur’s new head coach Thomas Frank has reflected on his team’s dramatic defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. Frank said his players had delivered almost a perfect performance against one of Europe’s strongest clubs.

«I am extremely proud of the team. We showed we can compete on equal terms with what may be the best team in the world. For 75–80 minutes we played almost perfectly. That is why it is so hard to accept the loss. Penalties are like a coin toss. There is a lot of positive to take, but football is about winning. Today it was cruel.»

Frank highlighted Tottenham’s tactical flexibility and praised the fans for their strong backing.

«We will be tactically adaptable this season. Today we had a special plan, which worked, but in the end we lost the result. The fans were fantastic and gave us everything. We will need their energy again on Saturday.»

In a wry comment, he added:

«Medically speaking, the operation was a success, but the patient died.»

The Dane also referred to the experience of his predecessor Ange Postecoglou, who won a trophy but was soon dismissed.

«The last coach who won a trophy was sacked. I do not want to make the same mistake.»

Tottenham will open their 2025/26 Premier League campaign at home to Burnley on August 16, marking Frank’s debut in England’s top flight as the club’s head coach.
