Three suicide bombers attacked the headquarters of a Pakistani paramilitary force on Monday, killing three personnel and injuring at least five, authorities said.

Police reported that the assailants fired on security staff as they forced their way into the frontier constabulary complex in Peshawar before detonating explosives inside.

A senior official, speaking anonymously to Reuters, said the first bomber struck the main entrance while the others entered the compound. He added that army and police units had sealed off the area and were handling the situation carefully, fearing some attackers might still be inside.

The paramilitary headquarters is situated in a densely populated part of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Local resident Safdar Khan told Reuters that the road leading to the compound had been closed to traffic and cordoned off by security forces.

The five injured, including two paramilitary personnel, were taken to Lady Reading Hospital, its spokesperson Mohammad Asim confirmed.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Islamist militants in the region have increased assaults in recent weeks following deadly border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan last month. Pakistan accuses the Afghan Taliban of sheltering militants who launch cross-border attacks, a claim Kabul denies.
