Israel’s Incoming UK Ambassador Barred From Leaving Country Over Leak Probe

Israel’s incoming ambassador to the UK, Tzachi Braverman, has been banned from leaving the country after being arrested as part of an investigation into the leak of classified military documents.
Braverman, who serves as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s chief of staff, is accused of attempting to obstruct an inquiry into the leak of secret papers from the prime minister’s office related to Israel’s war goals in Gaza. The documents were published by the German newspaper Bild in 2024 and were seen as supporting Netanyahu’s justification for continuing the conflict.
After a 13-hour interrogation by Israel’s major crime unit on Sunday, Braverman was barred from leaving Israel for 30 days and banned from entering the prime minister’s office for 15 days. He has denied any wrongdoing, describing the investigation as «delusional» and politically motivated, and said he would appeal the restrictions.
The case could delay Braverman’s posting to London, leaving Israel without an ambassador to the UK at a sensitive diplomatic moment, as the future of Gaza and relations with Britain remain uncertain.
