Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the «God of War» video game series.

The role marks Hurst’s return to the franchise after he voiced the Norse god Thor in the 2022 game «God of War: Ragnarok.» Kratos is the central figure of the series, a Spartan-born warrior who becomes the god of war.

The show will draw from the storylines of the two most recent games, focusing on Kratos as he raises his young son Atreus following the death of his wife Faye. As they journey to scatter her ashes, Kratos struggles to guide his son toward becoming a better god, while Atreus challenges his father to rediscover his humanity.

Hurst is best known for his roles as Opie in FX’s «Sons of Anarchy» and as the antagonist Beta in AMC’s «The Walking Dead.» His film credits include «Remember the Titans,» «Saving Private Ryan» and «We Were Soldiers,» and he is set to appear in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of «The Odyssey.»

Amazon first approved the «God of War» series in 2022. After the departure of original showrunner Rafe Judkins in 2024, Ronald D. Moore took over creative leadership and now serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner. The first two episodes will be directed by Frederick E.O. Toye.

The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, with Cory Barlog and other key figures from the franchise among the executive producers.

Kursiv also reports that Disney has restarted work on its live-action adaptation of Tangled, casting Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim in the lead roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider.
