Sony Group has outlined plans to expand the Peanuts franchise across music, film and global distribution following its acquisition of an 80% stake in Peanuts Worldwide.

Speaking on the company’s fiscal third-quarter earnings call, chief financial officer Lin Tao said the deal brings together Sony’s music and film divisions to grow what he described as one of the world’s most enduring intellectual properties.

Sony Music Entertainment Japan plans to integrate Peanuts characters and stories into music, video and live events, including collaborations with its artists. Sony Pictures Entertainment will use its production capabilities and international distribution network to broaden the brand’s global reach.

Sony said it will continue working closely with the family of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, who retains a 20% stake in the business.

The acquisition includes the purchase of Canadian company WildBrain’s 41% stake for about $457 mln, lifting Sony’s total ownership to 80%. The deal generated a one-time accounting gain of roughly $286.5 mln for Sony and is expected to close within the current fiscal year, subject to regulatory approval.
