Discord Clarifies Age Verification: Face Scans Not Required for Most Users

Discord has shared details about its new age assurance measures, reassuring users that not everyone will need to complete a face scan or upload an ID to access the platform. The update comes in response to questions from the community about recent changes.
The vast majority of users can continue using Discord exactly as they do today without confirming their age. Age verification is only required to access age-restricted experiences, such as certain servers, channels, or safety settings.
For most adults, Discord can confirm age using information already held by the platform. Age prediction technology helps determine, with high confidence, which users are adults, allowing access to age-appropriate features without explicit verification.
When additional confirmation is needed, Discord offers multiple privacy-friendly methods through trusted partners:
- Facial scans never leave the user’s device, and neither Discord nor its vendors receive them.
- ID uploads are used solely to verify age and are deleted after confirmation.
- Discord only receives information about the user’s age, identity is never linked to accounts.
Discord emphasises that the goal of these updates is to maintain safety while respecting privacy. The company said:
«Building a safer Discord requires a thoughtful approach alongside the communities who make Discord special.»
