Delegations from Uzbekistan and the Taliban met in Kabul to discuss long-term strategic goals, highlighting continued engagement between Tashkent and Afghanistan’s de facto authorities.

The Uzbek delegation was led by Javlon Vakhabov, head of the Strategic Studies Center at Uzbekistan’s Foreign Ministry, while the Taliban side was headed by Abdulhai Qanit, who leads the Strategic Studies Center under the Taliban-run Foreign Ministry.

In a post on X, Vakhabov said the talks focused on expanding cooperation between research institutions to advance a joint partnership agenda. The sides also discussed ways to increase public awareness of developments in both countries and the wider region through analytical collaboration.

Vakhabov expressed hope that the strategic objectives outlined during the meeting would translate into concrete initiatives in the coming year, though details were not disclosed. The Taliban have not publicly commented on the talks.

Uzbekistan, which shares a border with Afghanistan, has maintained working ties with the Taliban since their return to power, despite not formally recognizing their government.
