Azerbaijan said drones believed to have crossed from Iran struck areas around an airport in its Nakhchivan exclave on Thursday, injuring two people.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the unmanned aircraft crossed the border from Iranian territory before landing in separate locations in the region. One drone fell on the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, which lies about 10 kilometres from the Iranian border. Another landed near a school in a nearby village.

Officials said two people were wounded in the incidents. Video footage shared by a source close to the government appeared to show black smoke rising close to the airport terminal.

The foreign ministry said Abbas Mousavi had been summoned to provide an explanation. Baku demanded that Tehran quickly clarify the situation and take steps to ensure similar incidents do not happen again.

«We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran clarify the matter in the shortest possible time, provide an explanation and take the necessary urgent measures to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future,» the ministry said in a statement.

Azerbaijan added that it reserves the right to take what it described as «appropriate response measures» following the incident.

The ministry also reports that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Bakhtiyor Saidov called Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov to inquire about the incident.
