Iran Threatens Protesters with Lethal Force Amid Escalating Unrest

Authorities in Iran have warned that security forces may use lethal force against suspected criminals and protesters as tensions rise following recent military strikes involving the United States and Israel.
Ahmadreza Radan, commander-in-chief of Iran’s Law Enforcement Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, said police had been authorised to shoot suspected thieves during what officials described as a wartime situation.
Speaking on state television, Radan said officers had been given a «shoot-to-kill order» to deal with individuals suspected of theft or disorder amid the current crisis.
Separately, Salar Velayatmadar, a member of Iran’s parliamentary national security commission and former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, warned parents to prevent their children from joining anti-government demonstrations.
In comments broadcast by state media, he said families could face severe consequences if young people participated in protests or were seen as aligning with the country’s enemies.
The warnings come as Iranian authorities report attacks on police stations and bases linked to the paramilitary Basij force, raising fears of renewed nationwide unrest.
Iran has experienced waves of protests since late last year, with students and young people playing a significant role. Human rights organisations say demonstrations have been met with a harsh crackdown, although casualty figures remain difficult to verify due to widespread internet restrictions.
The escalating rhetoric from senior officials suggests the government is preparing to take stronger measures to maintain control as regional tensions and domestic unrest intensify.
