Albert Park delivered its usual drama as the first Qualifying session of the 2026 Formula 1 season got underway. Mercedes came into the weekend as favourites, and George Russell reinforced that status with a dominant FP3 performance, finishing six tenths ahead of the field. Stable, fast, and reliable, Russell was the man to beat throughout Qualifying.

Kimi Antonelli looked strong early but suffered a heavy FP3 crash after overusing the kerbs, leaving his car in pieces. Mercedes managed an impressive rebuild, allowing him to join Q3 and secure second on the grid, though investigations into his pit lane releases are ongoing.

Ferrari and Hamilton

Ferrari showed mixed form. Charles Leclerc impressed consistently, while Lewis Hamilton, a master of Albert Park’s one-lap pace with eight career poles here, struggled on soft tyres but still made it through to Q3 in seventh.

Home Hopefuls Piastri and Norris

Oscar Piastri topped FP2 and looked strong in FP3 but ultimately qualified fifth, ahead of teammate Lando Norris in sixth. Both Australians gave their home crowd something to cheer despite McLaren’s slightly behind-the-front-end pace.

Red Bull Misfortune

Red Bull faced an early blow as Max Verstappen crashed out in Q1, leaving him to start tomorrow from 20th. His teammate, debutant Isack Hadjar, shone by taking third in an impressive showing.

Midfield and New Entrants

Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad impressed by reaching Q3, while Cadillac’s new entry struggled to match the established teams, with Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas finishing outside the top 15. Aston Martin also faced reliability issues, leaving Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll out of Q2.

The situation around Lance Stroll’s participation remains unclear as he now needs a special permission from the FIA to enter the race.

The Grid

The top 10 was completed by Leclerc, Piastri, Norris, Hamilton, Lawson, Lindblad, and Bortoleto. Mercedes locked out the front row, Ferrari showed potential for the race, and Red Bull’s Hadjar announced himself as a contender.

The opening race promises strategic battles, potential overtakes, and a fight for recovery for Verstappen from P20, making the 2026 Australian Grand Prix a race not to miss.
