Meta has acquired Moltbook, a platform where artificial intelligence bots communicate with each other.
The Moltbook team will join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs to explore «new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses,» the company said. The platform began in January as an experimental Reddit-like site allowing AI programs to hold their own discussions, including commenting on their human users.
Tech experts have praised Moltbook for its computer-led dialogues, while others have raised cybersecurity and ethical concerns about AI autonomy. Meta described the platform’s approach as «a novel step in a rapidly developing space.» The company did not disclose the deal’s value.
Meta has been investing heavily in AI agents and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said the company will increase AI spending this year. The acquisition follows Meta’s December purchase of Manus, a Chinese-founded AI start-up.
Moltbook uses OpenClaw, an AI agent that acts as a digital assistant to manage emails, appointments and apps, and can interact with other bots on the platform. OpenClaw’s creator, Peter Steinberger, now works at OpenAI, where he is helping develop the next generation of personal AI agents.
While developers have embraced OpenClaw as an open-source tool, cybersecurity experts have warned about the risks of connecting AI agents to everyday devices. China’s cyber security agency has issued alerts after local governments and firms experimented with the tool.
