Following a crucial manual piloting test, the astronauts aboard the Artemis II mission successfully repaired a malfunction with the Orion spacecraft’s waste management system in close coordination with mission control.

The Artemis II flight marks the first crewed journey of NASA’s lunar exploration programme. Carrying three American astronauts and one Canadian, the historic mission aims to test the capsule’s life support, navigation and communication systems during a lunar flyby. It serves as a vital stepping stone for Artemis III, which plans to eventually return humans to the Moon’s surface.

The plumbing issue emerged shortly after the four-person crew completed a proximity operations demonstration. During this exercise, the astronauts manually flew Orion near a discarded rocket stage to evaluate the spacecraft’s thrusters and navigation sensors.

Prior to executing an apogee raise burn on April 1, the crew noticed a flashing fault light. Engineers in Texas analysed the telemetry data and walked the spacefarers through the necessary troubleshooting steps to resolve the system fault.

With normal toilet operations restored, the astronauts began a four-hour rest period. They are slated to awaken at 7 a.m. EDT on Thursday, April 2 to prepare for the perigee raise burn. This upcoming manoeuvre will elevate the lowest altitude of Orion’s trajectory around Earth.

When paired with the earlier apogee adjustment, this burn establishes the spacecraft’s foundational high Earth orbit and readies the crew for translunar operations. Once preparations are complete, the astronauts will return to sleep at approximately 9:40 a.m. to preserve their rigorous rest cycle between critical mission tasks.
