President Donald Trump abruptly dismissed Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday amidst escalating dissatisfaction with her governance at the Department of Justice.

The removal was triggered by her controversial treatment of sensitive documents relating to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the collapse of high-profile criminal cases opposing the president’s political rivals.

Todd Blanche, the current Deputy Attorney General, was immediately elevated to acting attorney general. In a social media broadcast, Trump commended Blanche as a «very talented and respected Legal Mind.» Speculation is now mounting in Washington that Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin is the frontrunner to secure the permanent cabinet position.

Public Statements and Transitions

Despite the sudden exit, the public discourse between Trump and Bondi stayed highly cordial.

  • Trump complimented Bondi as a «Great American Patriot and a loyal friend», crediting her tenure with a substantial nationwide decrease in illegal activities. He also teased that she would soon transition into a prominent role in private sector.
  • Bondi’s Response: Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the outgoing attorney general confirmed she would assist Blanche with the handover process before proceeding into her new corporate position.

Key Factors Behind the Dismissal

A primary catalyst for Bondi’s sacking was the botched publication of the Epstein files. Upon Trump’s return to the Oval Office, Bondi guaranteed full transparency in relation to the archives. However, she subsequently restricted access, famously providing a select group of social media influencers with what was already in the publicly available.

This prompted Congress to intervene, passing legislation authored by Representative Thomas Massie that legally required the unsealing of all Epstein files by December 2025. While a portion of the archive was ultimately published, millions of pages were delayed or completely withheld. Consequently, Bondi was called to testify this April.

The Justice Department experienced severe backlash in November when federal allegations against ex-FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James entirely unravelled. These charges, reportedly brought at Trump’s behest, were thrown out after a federal judge commanded that the acting prosecutor assigned to the cases had been invalidly designated.

A Divided Political Reaction

The sudden cabinet reshuffle, which arrives several days after Trump sacked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem over a Minnesota ICE appointment case dispute and replaced her with former Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin, has drawn sharply polarised responses across the political spectrum:

  • Republican Support: Several conservative figures openly welcomed the firing. Rep. Thomas Massie celebrated the move as a necessary step towards fully publishing and investigating the Epstein network. Similarly, Rep. Nancy Mace condemned Bondi’s mishandling of the dossiers and expressed strong backing for Lee Zeldin taking the reins.
  • Democratic Condemnation: House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered a blistering critique, labelling Pam Bondi the most fraudulent attorney general in modern U.S. history. He accused her of unlawfully weaponising the justice system to counter political opponents, flagrantly breaching federal law and deliberately burying millions of Epstein-related records.
