Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev suffered one of the most unexpected defeats of his career, losing to Italian Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Masters at Monte Carlo Country Club with a score of 0:6, 0:6. The match lasted only 49 minutes.

Before the match, Medvedev was considered the clear favorite. At Winline, the odds for a Berrettini victory were 3.20. At the same time, the scenario with two «bagels» was priced at 7700.00 — approximately a 0.013% probability.

There was no real contest on the court. Berrettini took the initiative from the very first games and confidently won the first set — 6:0.

In the second set, the picture did not change. The Italian continued to dominate, not allowing his opponent to win a single game.

Medvedev made 27 unforced errors and hit only three winners. In the second set, the world No. 10 emotionally smashed his racket on the court and threw it away, reports Match TV.

This is Medvedev’s first loss at the ATP level with two «bagels.»

According to Opta Ace, Berrettini became the fifth player since 1973 to defeat a top-10 opponent with such a score. This is his first «bagel» since June 2024, when he defeated Lorenzo Musetti in Stuttgart.

In the next round, the Italian will face the winner of the match between Joao Fonseca and Arthur Rinderknech.
