U.S. forces have seized an Iranian-linked container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation in tensions that could threaten a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

According to United States Central Command (CENTCOM), U.S. Marines launched from the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli by helicopter to board and capture the vessel, identified as the M/V Touska. The operation reportedly involved warning shots fired at the ship’s engine before it was taken into custody.

The seizure followed a series of incidents in the region, including Iran temporarily restricting traffic through the Strait, attacking an Indian tanker, and redirecting commercial vessels. In response, former U.S. president Donald Trump ordered action against ships accused of violating U.S. sanctions.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments, has long been a flashpoint for conflict. Analysts warn that the latest confrontation could disrupt international trade routes and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over the fate of the seized vessel and whether negotiations aimed at stabilising the region will proceed. With ceasefire talks looming, the incident adds further pressure to an already volatile situation in the Middle East.
