Roblox will require users under 16 in Indonesia to undergo facial scanning to verify their age, as part of new government rules restricting minors’ access to digital platforms.

The changes, announced in Jakarta by Roblox’s head of public policy Nicky Jackson Colaco, are among the strictest measures the company has introduced globally. The platform will roll out age-based accounts, including «Roblox Kids» for ages 5 to 12 with no chat features, and «Roblox Select» for users aged 13 to 15 with limited communication options.

Around 23 mln Indonesian accounts identified as belonging to under-16s will be automatically transitioned to the new system. Users who do not complete the facial age verification will be placed in restricted accounts without chat access.

The verification process requires a short video selfie to estimate a user’s age, with Roblox stating that the data is deleted immediately after processing. The platform has approximately 45 mln users in Indonesia, nearly half of whom are children, according to government figures.

The move follows new regulations introduced in March aimed at protecting minors from online risks such as addiction, cyberbullying and fraud. Roblox was classified as a high-risk platform, prompting stricter controls than those applied to other services.

Authorities say additional measures include limits on screen time and parental controls, allowing families to set usage hours. Several major platforms, including YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, have also agreed to tighten restrictions for younger users under the new rules.
