Trump Launches “Project Freedom” to Reopen Hormuz Strait

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new initiative, dubbed «Project Freedom,» aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping amid heightened tensions with Iran. The move is framed as a humanitarian effort but carries significant military and geopolitical implications.
Humanitarian framing meets military deployment
Trump described the operation as support for «neutral and innocent» nations affected by disruptions to global trade. The plan reportedly involves deploying guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, and around 15,000 U.S. personnel to secure shipping routes. However, Tehran has criticised the initiative as a violation of the fragile ceasefire, warning it could escalate tensions.
A vital global chokepoint
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy corridors, with roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies passing through it, around 20 mln barrels daily. Since February, mutual blockades by the US and Iran have disrupted flows and driven energy prices sharply higher, intensifying concerns across global markets.
Iran’s proposal and deadline
Iran has issued a 30-day deadline for negotiations, presenting a 14-point plan that includes lifting US sanctions, ending the naval blockade, and withdrawing American forces. The proposal, reportedly delivered via intermediaries, focuses on achieving a ceasefire before addressing longer-term issues such as nuclear policy. Trump has expressed scepticism, while Iranian officials warn against what they describe as unrealistic U.S. demands.
Uncertain path ahead
If talks collapse, analysts warn of potential military escalation and broader regional instability, alongside further shocks to global energy supply. Alternatively, limited agreements on maritime security could emerge, easing immediate tensions while leaving deeper disputes unresolved.
The success or failure of «Project Freedom» may prove pivotal not only for regional security but also for the stability of global energy markets.
