Coco Gauff demonstrated her trademark resilience on Saturday to secure her place in the last 16 of the 2026 Italian Open following a tense battle with Solana Sierra.

The American third seed was forced to dig deep on the Rome clay after dropping a tight opening set to her Argentine rival. She bounced back emphatically to deliver a 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 victory after two hours and 10 minutes of gruelling tennis.

Despite a completely one-sided middle set, Sierra proved to be a remarkably stubborn opponent throughout the encounter. The Argentine capitalised on her chances by converting six of her 10 break points while successfully fending off 63.6 per cent of the 22 break points she faced on her own serve.

It was a somewhat erratic serving day for Gauff, who saved only four of the 10 break points against her and registered five double faults compared to Sierra’s three. Nevertheless, the American made up for her serving struggles with aggressive baseline returning. She constantly pressured her opponent by generating 22 break point opportunities and successfully converting eight of them.

The deciding set provided plenty of late drama for the spectators. Gauff appeared to have secured the victory when she broke Sierra’s serve to take a 5-3 lead but the Argentine immediately broke back to stay in the contest. Showing her mental fortitude, Gauff held her nerve to break Sierra once again in the following game and officially close out the match.

The victory ensures the American will continue her campaign in the Round of 16 of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament.
