2-2 Draw Between Cruz Azul and Chivas Marks Temporary Closure of Estadio Banorte

Cruz Azul and Chivas treated fans to a fiercely competitive 2-2 draw in the first leg of the Clausura 2026 semi-finals. The thrilling encounter served as a fitting temporary farewell to the Estadio Banorte, ESPN reports.
Despite taking the lead twice through Santiago Sandoval and Angel Sepulveda, the Guadalajara side were pegged back by brilliant finishes from Carlos Rodriguez and Christian Ebere.
A frantic opening and goalkeeping blunders
The match commenced at an incredibly fast pace. Within the first seven minutes both teams had already carved out clear goalscoring opportunities. Just two minutes in, Jose Paradela used his pace to beat Fernando Gonzalez and fired a shot that deflected off Diego Campillo to narrowly miss the target. Chivas quickly responded when Richard Ledezma rattled the crossbar with a powerful strike.
The visitors finally broke the deadlock in the 29th minute following a massive blunder by Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier. Ricardo Marin unleashed a seemingly harmless shot that the Colombian shot-stopper fumbled, allowing Santiago Sandoval to pounce on the loose ball and tap it into the net. The error turned the home crowd against Mier who endured loud boos for the remainder of the half.
However, the hosts responded swiftly. A brilliant counter-attack orchestrated by Jose Paradela found Carlos Rodriguez in acres of space. Seizing the moment, Rodriguez executed a stunning chipped finish over a hesitant Oscar Whalley.
The goal, which clipped the post before crossing the line, was highly reminiscent of the spectacular strike Rodríguez scored against Chivas in the Apertura 2025 quarter-finals just six months ago.
Second-half drama and VAR intervention
Chivas manager Gabriel Milito made a crucial tactical tweak at the break by introducing Miguel Gomez. The substitution paid immediate dividends. Five minutes into the second half Gomez delivered a precise cross from the left flank to Angel Sepulveda.
The striker powered a header past Mier to restore the lead for Chivas. Despite being a former Cruz Azul hero who helped them secure the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup, Sepulveda was heavily booed by the home support and respectfully chose not to celebrate his goal against his former club.
Cruz Azul’s second equaliser was steeped in controversy. Bryan Gonzalez brought down Christian Ebere on the edge of the penalty area. The referee initially awarded a free-kick but a VAR intervention confirmed the foul occurred inside the box. Ebere stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-2.
Looking ahead to the second leg and the World Cup
The final whistle leaves the tie perfectly poised, though Chivas hold a distinct advantage. Thanks to their superior position in the regular season table, a draw or a victory in the second leg at the Estadio Jalisco on Saturday will see the Guadalajara outfit progress to the Clausura 2026 Final. Cruz Azul will return to training at La Noria on Thursday before flying out for the decisive return fixture.
Off the pitch, the match held historic significance. FIFA officials were in attendance to inspect the Estadio Banorte’s operations, reviewing everything from parking logistics to pitch conditions. The stadium will now close its doors for major preparations until June 11, 2026 when it is scheduled to host the World Cup opening match between Mexico and South Africa.
