Peter Jackson finally broke his silence regarding the infamous recasting of Ryan Gosling in his 2009 big-screen adaptation of Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones.

Gosling was initially hired to play the father of Saoirse Ronan’s lead character but was unceremoniously dropped from the project. The actor revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in 2010 that he was sacked after gaining 60 pounds for the role without consulting the director.

Speaking recently at the Cannes Film Festival after accepting an Honorary Palme d’Or, Jackson was asked about Gosling’s previous claims and spoke openly about the situation that led to Mark Wahlberg stepping in to take over the role.

Taking responsibility for casting errors

Jackson was careful not to place the blame on the actors involved.

«I won’t talk about any particular examples of actors because it’s a personal, private thing and it’s not their fault,» the filmmaker explained.

He insisted that whenever a recasting occurs, the fault lies entirely with the production team for making the wrong choice initially rather than any specific wrongdoing by the performer.

«You just got to realise that what you were imagining isn’t really quite happening, which means that we got it wrong and so we take full responsibility,» Jackson admitted.

He went on to praise Gosling as a «fantastic actor» but stressed that successful filmmaking relies heavily on chemistry. Jackson described the cinematic process as a complicated mix of communication, storytelling and how well an individual gels with a wider group. Despite extensive planning during the pre-production phase, he acknowledged that directors occasionally simply make mistakes.

A lack of communication

Gosling previously explained that the friction stemmed from differing visions of his character’s physical appearance. Believing the grieving father should weigh 210 pounds, Gosling altered his physique drastically.

However, a severe lack of communication during the early stages of production meant this creative choice was never discussed with the director.

«It was a huge movie, and there’s so many things to deal with, and he couldn’t deal with the actors individually,» Gosling recalled in 2010. «I just showed up on set, and I had gotten it wrong. Then I was fat and unemployed.»

Saoirse Ronan’s perspective

Saoirse Ronan, who starred as Susie Salmon in the film, shared her own memories of the sudden casting shake-up during a 2024 appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. She noted that while principal photography with Gosling had not yet officially begun, the cast had already completed significant preparation and rehearsals together.

Ronan admitted she was sad to see him and his dog George leave but acknowledged that the creative differences were ultimately too vast to overcome.

«I think the reasons why they parted were totally valid, and I’ve spoken to both now and it happens. It’s not personal, necessarily. It’s like sometimes you’re just not on the same page.»

She also pointed out that Mark Wahlberg’s real-life experience brought a necessary authenticity to the heavy role.

«Mark was able to step in, and he was a father. He was a father to, like, I don’t know, three kids? He probably had an experience of that that Ryan felt he didn’t. Ryan was like 27. He was young.»
