For the first time in a quarter of a century, the New York Knicks are heading back to the NBA Finals, CNN reports.

The historic milestone was secured in ruthless fashion on Monday evening as New York dismantled the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-93 on their own court. The blowout victory cemented a clean 4-0 sweep in the Eastern Conference finals and extended the Knicks’ phenomenal postseason winning streak to 11 games, a feat last achieved by the Golden State Warriors during their 2017 championship run.

By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Cleveland arena had essentially transformed into a New York home game. Travelling fans, alongside high-profile celebrity supporters such as Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner, spent the closing minutes treating the stunned stadium to deafening chants of «Knicks in four!»

The anatomy of a blowout

While Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell fought valiantly to keep his team alive, scoring an impressive 31 points and registering the Cavaliers’ first eight points of the night, the hosts were ultimately entirely outclassed.

The match was effectively decided late in the opening quarter. With New York holding a narrow 30-26 advantage, they suddenly flipped a switch and unleashed a devastating 20-0 scoring run over a five-minute span. During this brutal stretch, Cleveland failed to convert nine consecutive shots and gave away four turnovers.

From that point on, it was one-way traffic. The Knicks marched into half-time with a comfortable 68-49 cushion and stretched their advantage to a staggering 45 points in the final quarter. The dominance was so absolute that New York’s starters were pulled from the floor with nearly eight minutes still left on the clock.

Karl-Anthony Towns anchored the visitors with a commanding double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds. The offensive burden was shared seamlessly, with OG Anunoby tallying 17 points. The New York bench was equally punishing, spearheaded by Landry Shamet who contributed 16 points.

Shamet concludes the series with a jaw-dropping stat line from beyond the arc, hitting 11 of his 12 three-point attempts over the four matches. Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson also chipped in with 15 points each.

A masterstroke by Mike Brown

This triumph marks a brilliant tactical achievement for Mike Brown. Brought in to replace Tom Thibodeau after last season’s playoff exit against Indiana, Brown has completely revitalised the franchise in his debut season.

He becomes only the 15th head coach since the 1976 NBA-ABA merger to reach the Finals in his first year at a new team. For Brown, it is a personal full-circle moment, having last coached in the Finals back in 2007 when he ironically led the Cavaliers.

The Knicks now await the outcome of the Western Conference finals, which is currently tied at 2-2 between the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs. Regardless of who advances, New York will begin their quest for a first championship ring since 1973 on the road on June 3.
