The White House has issued a medical memorandum declaring U.S. President Donald Trump to be in «excellent health» and entirely capable of fulfilling his duties, Reuters reports.

The report, penned by the president’s physician Dr Sean Barbabella, follows a Tuesday examination at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. According to the document released late on Friday, the 79-year-old exhibited strong cardiac, pulmonary and neurological capabilities. Dr Barbabella firmly concluded that Trump remains completely fit to execute his demanding responsibilities as Head of State.

Addressing public scrutiny

This latest hospital visit marks the president’s third medical assessment at the military facility in just over a year. Trump’s physical well-being has recently been the subject of intense public observation, prompting the White House to explain visible symptoms such as bruised hands, swollen ankles and a blotchy neck.

In his memo, Dr Barbabella addressed a number of these visual cues. He noted that while the president still experiences slight swelling in his lower legs, the condition has noticeably improved since last year.

Furthermore, the persistent bruising on Trump’s hands was categorised as a benign and common occurrence. The physician attributed this discolouration to minor soft tissue irritation caused by rigorous handshaking, which is exacerbated by the president taking daily aspirin to prevent cardiovascular issues.

However, the medical summary did leave certain questions unanswered. It failed to provide reasons for a dermatological treatment on the president’s neck back in March and did not clarify whether he had undergone another MRI scan following his previous one in October.

For his part, the president appeared highly satisfied with the check-up, stating shortly afterwards that «everything checked out perfectly».

Age and preventative care

Approaching his 80th birthday in June, Trump holds the record as the oldest individual to assume the U.S. presidency. He has routinely weaponised the topic of age and vitality in the political arena, often contrasting his own stamina with that of his predecessor. Joe Biden stepped down from office last year at the age of 82 following relentless media speculation surrounding his mental and physical fortitude.

To ensure he remains in top condition, Trump underwent a thorough neurological evaluation that confirmed a normal mental status and included routine checks for anxiety and depression. His overall cardiac function was also deemed completely normal.

Looking ahead, the medical team provided a range of preventative advice. The president has been encouraged to enhance his diet, boost his physical activity levels and focus on continued weight loss alongside his low-dose aspirin regimen.
