A senior UK Treasury minister has said Britain’s eventual return to the European Union is «an inevitability,» marking one of the strongest pro-EU statements made by a serving member of the Labour government since Brexit.

Lord Spencer Livermore, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, made the remarks during a debate in the House of Lords. He stressed that the view was his personal opinion, arguing that rejoining the bloc would ultimately be in Britain’s economic interest.

The comments go beyond Labour’s official position. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has repeatedly ruled out rejoining the EU, the single market and the customs union, instead pursuing a «reset» of relations with Brussels through closer cooperation on trade, defence and mobility.

Conservative politicians criticized Livermore’s remarks, arguing they undermine the 2016 Brexit referendum result. The statement comes as the UK and EU seek to strengthen ties through a series of post-Brexit agreements aimed at reducing trade barriers and expanding cooperation.

The debate over Britain’s long-term relationship with the EU has intensified ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Brexit referendum, with recent polls showing growing public support for closer ties with the bloc.
