Rubio Defends Attending UFC Event with Trump Instead of Iran Talks

The secretary of state says diplomatic efforts continued despite backlash over his appearance at a sporting event during a major foreign policy crisis

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended his decision to attend a UFC event alongside President Donald Trump while negotiations aimed at ending the conflict with Iran were underway, rejecting criticism that he had neglected diplomatic responsibilities.

The controversy stems from Rubio’s appearance at a UFC event in Miami with Trump and UFC president Dana White while peace talks involving Iran faced setbacks. Critics, including Democratic lawmakers, argued that senior U.S. officials should have prioritized negotiations over attending a sporting event during a major international crisis.

Rubio responded by saying that diplomacy continued through other channels and that his presence at the event did not interfere with ongoing efforts to reach an agreement with Tehran. He also emphasized that the administration remains focused on securing a lasting resolution to the conflict and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities.

The debate comes as the Trump administration faces increasing scrutiny over its handling of the Iran conflict, which has entered its fourth month. Lawmakers from both parties have questioned the administration’s strategy and the pace of negotiations, while discussions on sanctions and security in the Strait of Hormuz continue.

Despite the criticism, Rubio has insisted that progress toward a potential agreement remains possible, with U.S. officials continuing diplomatic contacts as they seek to prevent further escalation in the region.
