The United States has made a resounding start to its home World Cup campaign following a comfortable 4-1 victory against Paraguay in their opening Group D fixture. Under the guidance of manager Mauricio Pochettino the hosts built an unassailable lead before half-time and safely secured all three points.

The Americans exploded out of the blocks and pinned their opponents back from the opening whistle. Their relentless early pressure was rewarded in the seventh minute when Christian Pulisic orchestrated a dangerous attacking move that ultimately forced Damian Bobadilla to turn the ball into his own net.

The hosts continued to dictate the tempo and refused to let Paraguay settle into any sort of rhythm. The advantage was doubled in the 31st minute when Folarin Balogun expertly converted a precise delivery from Pulisic.

Balogun was not finished there. Just before the interval the dynamic forward burst past the South American defence and unleashed a spectacular strike into the top left corner to send the USA into the dressing room with a commanding 3-0 lead.

A Spirited but Brief Revival

Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro introduced several tactical changes at the break in a desperate attempt to salvage the fixture. The visitors gradually grew into the contest and began to test American goalkeeper Matt Freese.

Their improved efforts finally paid off in the 73rd minute. Julio Enciso managed to pick out Mauricio in a dangerous position and the midfielder fired a clinical effort into the bottom right corner to briefly reduce the deficit.

As the match entered its closing stages the referee was forced to intervene following a series of heated exchanges. Paraguayan trio Diego Gomez, Alex Arce and Junior Alonso were all shown yellow cards alongside American midfielder Tyler Adams.

Despite a more spirited second-half display from the visitors the United States had the final say. Deep into stoppage time Giovanni Reyna pounced on a glaring defensive error to confidently dispatch the ball and round off a comprehensive 4-1 triumph.
