Portugal have completely shrugged off the mounting criticism following their 1-1 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening World Cup fixture. Manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that the squad is more united than ever as they prepare for their crucial second Group K clash against Uzbekistan.

Despite dominating possession and controlling the ball against the African side, Portugal managed a mere seven shots. A sixth-minute header from Joao Neves proved to be their only effort on target during the entire match.

Following the lacklustre performance, Martinez acknowledged that his team started brightly but lost their structure and discipline after the opening 20 minutes. However, he maintained that the external noise and media scrutiny are not affecting the players.

«We are strong and focused,» Martinez stated. «And our group is even more united than before. It is a process. Tension is not part of our team».

The manager added that while it is entirely normal to face criticism following a poor result, it does not dictate their mindset or training preparations.

Martinez also provided a comprehensive squad update, confirming that every player is currently fit and available for selection with the exception of Tomas Araujo. Crucially, key defender Ruben Dias is set to return to the fold after sitting out the opening match.

Defending the captain

The manager also took the opportunity to staunchly defend his 41-year-old captain Cristiano Ronaldo. Following the draw with DR Congo, there were growing external calls for the veteran forward to be dropped to the bench against Uzbekistan.

Martinez quickly dismissed these suggestions, highlighting Ronaldo’s tactical importance and his ongoing contribution to the national side.

«We are a team that wants the ball,» Martinez explained. «We want to defend and react quickly. We want to counterattack quickly».

He elaborated that such a system requires a player capable of opening up space through intelligent movement and noted that Ronaldo remains one of the best in the world at executing this role. Martinez further praised the forward as a dedicated role model who continues to push for improvement for the sake of the team.

With Colombia currently topping Group K following a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, Martinez recognises the importance of securing a win on Tuesday to keep pace with the South Americans and guarantee a spot in the knockout stages.

While acknowledging the collective disappointment stemming from their first match, the manager remains highly confident that his side is ready to deliver a dominant 90-minute performance against their upcoming opponents
