Mirra Andreeva Falls to Alexandrova in Bad Homburg

Russian tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva has suffered a premature exit from the WTA 500 grass-court tournament in Bad Homburg following a straight-sets defeat to her compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Thanks to her high seeding the world number five was granted a bye into the second round of the German competition. However she struggled to find her rhythm on the grass against an inspired opponent. Alexandrova, currently ranked 19th in the WTA standings, delivered a clinical performance to secure a 6-3, 6-4 victory in a match that lasted just one hour and 28 minutes.

While the result was undoubtedly a frustrating setback for the young prodigy she still managed to capture the affection of the spectators. In a rather unusual but heartwarming incident during the tense encounter Andreeva momentarily paused play to gently rescue a bee that had landed on the playing surface. The compassionate mid-match gesture quickly made headlines and provided a lighter moment amidst the disappointment of her sensational early exit.

Following this major upset Alexandrova confidently advances to the quarter-finals of the tournament. She now faces a highly anticipated clash against Japanese star Naomi Osaka who currently sits at 15th in the rankings.
