South Africa Edge Out South Korea to Secure Dramatic World Cup Knockout Spot

South Africa have qualified for the World Cup knockout stage after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in the final round of the group stage. The narrow win catapulted Bafana Bafana into second place in the group standings, sealing their progression to the tournament’s play-offs.
The first half was a cagey affair with South Korea controlling the tempo and enjoying the lion’s share of possession. However, they struggled to breach a disciplined South African backline and failed to create any genuine threats to worry goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. South Africa opted to play on the counter-attack, patiently waiting for their moment to strike after the interval.
That breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute thanks to an inspired tactical switch. Substitute Tshepang Moremi injected some much-needed pace down the left flank before delivering a precise low cross into the penalty area. Thapelo Maseko controlled the ball beautifully, turning his marker before drilling a clinical shot into the near corner.
Williams holds firm under late onslaught
Falling behind forced the Asian side to throw bodies forward. The South Korean coaching staff introduced fresh attacking options, including Cho Gue-sung, in a desperate bid to rescue their tournament. Despite the mounting pressure, the South African defence remained incredibly organised, with Williams commanding his box superbly to claim a succession of dangerous crosses.
In a tense finale, talisman Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in tried to spark a late comeback, but Bafana Bafana restricted them to speculative efforts. Deep into stoppage time, a final headed attempt from Park looked to test the keeper, but a well-positioned Williams comfortably gathered the ball.
The final whistle confirmed the historic 1-0 win, sending South Africa through to the round of 16 while leaving South Korea to reflect on a bitter group-stage exit.
