An explosion outside a residential block in Monaco has left three individuals wounded, with two currently fighting for their lives. The unprecedented blast prompted a massive emergency response and has sent shockwaves through the typically peaceful principality.

The incident took place just before 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT) on Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla, a street situated perilously close to the French border.

According to official reports, the explosion originated from a bag abandoned outside the building. Christophe Mirmand, Monaco’s Minister of State, revealed that the bag contained an improvised explosive device packed with bolts and pellets. The Monaco government confirmed that local surveillance networks captured footage of a suspect fleeing the scene across the border into France.

Speaking to the press, Mirmand stated that authorities are treating the blast as a highly probable attack. He emphasised the rarity of the situation, noting that to his knowledge an act of this nature has never before occurred in Monaco’s history.

While the identities of the victims have not been released to the public, Mirmand confirmed that two of the casualties sustained life-threatening injuries. All three individuals were immediately transported across the border to receive urgent medical care at a hospital in Nice.

The sheer scale of the incident necessitated the deployment of more than 100 police officers and emergency rescue personnel to secure the area and assist the wounded.

Prince Albert II publicly condemned the blast, labelling it a «heinous crime» that has deeply unsettled the entire local community. He assured residents that all relevant state departments have been mobilised and are actively working in close coordination with French law enforcement agencies to apprehend the perpetrator.

Officials are scheduled to provide a further update on the ongoing investigation on Tuesday.
