Shreyas Iyer Backs World Cup Winners as India Face England T20I Series

India captain Shreyas Iyer has signalled his intent to maintain team stability as his side prepares to face England in the opening match of a five-match T20I series today at Chester-le-Street. Following a disappointing 2-0 series defeat against Ireland, pressure has mounted to introduce 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into the playing XI.
However, Iyer remains reluctant to disrupt the opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, both of whom played integral roles in India’s T20 World Cup success earlier this year. Speaking on the eve of the first T20I, Iyer emphasised the importance of providing security and confidence to players who have already proven their worth on the global stage.
«The players who have won the last World Cup definitely have an idea of how to play T20, and they have continuously been the main pillars of that format, so it is very important to back them,» Iyer told reporters.
The call for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion has grown following a sensational IPL 2026 campaign where he amassed 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30. While India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate recently acknowledged that the teenager is «absolutely ready» for international cricket, he also stressed that Sooryavanshi must «bide his time» and follow the standard selection process.
India’s recent struggles in Ireland, where the team’s top order failed to adapt to challenging conditions, have intensified the debate over whether the management should persist with established stars or look to the future. Despite the clamour for change, Iyer appears committed to his current core, suggesting that any debut for the young sensation will only come if the current opening pair fails to find their form in the upcoming matches against England.
The first T20I is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM local time (10:00 PM IST) at the Riverside Ground.
