Charles Leclerc claimed a dramatic victory at the 2026 British Grand Prix as a late Safety Car secured his first win of the season for Ferrari. In a race defined by fluctuating fortunes, strategic battles and late heartbreak, the Monegasque driver held his nerve to cross the line ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell and teammate Lewis Hamilton.

A chaotic start at Silverstone

Polesitter Kimi Antonelli suffered immediate heartbreak as wheelspin off the line dropped the Italian teenager down to third. Leclerc capitalised instantly to take the lead with Hamilton slotting into second.

Further back the midfield descended into chaos. Alex Albon triggered a collision with Haas driver Ollie Bearman, earning the Williams man a 10-second time penalty. Oscar Piastri also suffered collateral damage in a separate tangle with Liam Lawson and was forced into an early pit stop for a new front wing.

Hamilton’s hopes of a record-breaking 10th home win took a massive blow on lap eight when the stewards handed him a five-second time penalty for a false start, having moved slightly before the lights went out.

Ferrari masterclass and Mercedes misfortune

With Hamilton nursing his penalty and complaining of graining tyres, Leclerc built a comfortable advantage at the front of the pack. Antonelli eventually overtook Hamilton on lap 11 into Copse corner and set about hunting down the race leader.

Ferrari responded perfectly during the pit stop phase. Leclerc swapped to the hard tyres on lap 26 in a slick 2.4-second stop. Mercedes opted to leave Antonelli out on a long stint before finally bringing him in on lap 36. The Italian emerged seven seconds behind Leclerc but utilised his fresher rubber to rapidly close the gap.

Late drama shakes up the grid

Just as a grandstand finish between Leclerc and Antonelli looked inevitable, disaster struck for Mercedes. On lap 42 Antonelli suddenly slowed and complained of a broken suspension. It transpired that debris had lodged in his wheel shield, ruining his race and forcing multiple pit stops. The youngster eventually plummeted down the order and a late track limits penalty consigned him to a devastating 16th-place finish.

The drama was far from over. On lap 48 Max Verstappen lost the rear of his Red Bull and spun into the gravel at Stowe. The incident immediately brought out the Safety Car. Despite a flurry of late pit stops for fresh soft tyres from the leaders, Race Control opted not to restart the session and the race concluded under yellow flags.

Leclerc took the chequered flag to secure a famous win for the Scuderia. Russell inherited second place ahead of Hamilton while Lando Norris brought his McLaren home in fourth to secure valuable points.
