A vertigo-inducing romantic gesture could cost two prominent extreme climbers their freedom. Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov swapped safety harnesses for felony charges last week when their illicit ascent of the Empire State Building culminated in an engagement and multiple arrests.

The duo, who star in a recently released documentary, pleaded not guilty in Manhattan. Prosecutors charged them with first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree criminal mischief and burglary. They also face misdemeanour counts for possessing burglary tools, criminal trespass and criminal tampering. The 33-year-old Nikolau and 32-year-old Kuznetsov, who climbs under the moniker Ivan Beerkus, could spend up to two decades behind bars for the stunt.

Released under supervision without monetary bail on July 2, the couple faced a media scrum outside the courthouse. Asked by a reporter why they risked their lives and liberty to scale the landmark, Kuznetsov responded:

«We believe in love.»

His lawyer, Jason Krinsky, echoed this sentiment by claiming the district attorney had overcharged what was simply a message of romance. Krinsky maintained his clients carried no burglary tools and did not intend to commit a crime beyond the trespass itself.

Breaching an American icon

Reaching the 443-metre summit required elaborate subterfuge. Investigators allege the thrill-seekers bought observation deck tickets the evening prior and hid inside the Art Deco skyscraper overnight to dodge morning security protocols.

Visitors are normally vetted for large packages and sports equipment, which the climbers managed to avoid. Once the coast was clear they bypassed a card-reader system and breached a secure 104th-floor door reportedly breaking a lock in the process to access the restricted maintenance areas.

Their stunt prompted a massive tactical response from local law enforcement. New York police scrambled drones and aviation units to monitor the black-clad intruders from the sky.

To ensure the safety of elite emergency officers sent 381 metres into the air to apprehend the pair, building engineers had to disable the tower’s high-frequency broadcast antenna for half an hour. Officials estimate the escapade caused roughly $2,000 in property damage while putting first responders in significant peril.

Streaming stars turn political

Before authorities could intervene Kuznetsov dropped to one knee on a precarious ledge to propose. This engagement followed a highly visible political statement. Balancing on the narrow spire, they displayed a massive black banner declaring, «When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace».

Such high-altitude antics are routine for the newly engaged couple. They have built a lucrative international brand on social media under the extreme «rooftopper» label by conquering imposing structures in France, California and China.

Their burgeoning romance and death-defying portfolio were recently immortalised in the 2024 Netflix documentary «Skywalkers: A Love Story». Now, their next scheduled appearance is not on a global streaming platform but in a Manhattan criminal courtroom on August 24.
