Samsung is preparing to unveil its latest generation of foldable devices at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in London on July 22. Recent leaks have provided a comprehensive look at the new hardware, confirming that the company plans to release two distinct book-style foldables: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and a redesigned base model known as the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra specifications

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is positioned as the direct successor to the previous generation, retaining a familiar design while incorporating significant internal hardware improvements. Leaks indicate that the device will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset.

One of the most notable changes is the battery upgrade, with the Ultra model now featuring a 5,000 mAh cell, a move that aligns it with the flagship Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung has also improved charging capabilities, with the Ultra model supporting 45W wired charging. The camera array remains largely consistent with previous iterations, featuring a 200MP primary sensor, a 10MP 3x telephoto lens and a 50MP ultrawide camera.

In terms of aesthetics, the Ultra model retains a squared-off design with a triple-camera arrangement along the outside edge. Retail colour options will include white, black and a deep purple, with a special green variant available exclusively through the Samsung website.

Redesigning base Galaxy Z Fold 8

While the Ultra maintains a more traditional profile, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 has undergone a radical transformation. This model is marketed as the «wide» version, designed to be shorter and broader than its Ultra counterpart to offer a more conventional smartphone experience.

The base Z Fold 8 features a 5.5-inch outer display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, providing a layout reminiscent of standard handsets from a decade ago. Internally, the device sports a 7.6-inch QHD+ panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio, allowing users to utilise the inner screen in landscape mode without rotating the device. Samsung has focused heavily on portability with this model, achieving a thickness of 4.5mm when unfolded and 9.7mm when folded, alongside a weight of approximately 200g.

Powering the wider model is the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, though it is paired with a slightly smaller 4,800 mAh battery and supports 25W charging. The Z Fold 8 will be sold in cream, graphite and lavender, while a pistachio colourway will be offered as an online exclusive. Both devices are expected to be available for pre-order immediately following the July 22 event.
