The latest rankings update reflects the dramatic conclusion to the month-long tournament. Spain earned an additional 30.27 points from their championship victory, propelling them to the top of the global standings with a total of 1995.88 points. The result dethroned the previous leaders, Argentina, who slipped to second place with 1970.37 points after failing to defend their world title.
The 1-0 triumph in New Jersey secured Spain their second World Cup trophy, adding to their historic 2010 victory in South Africa. The updated rankings cement their current dominance in international football following a gruelling 48-team tournament jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Shifts across the global top five
While the top two positions swapped hands, the rest of the top five experienced varied fortunes following the tournament’s conclusion. France retained their third-place ranking with 1948.97 points despite suffering a high-scoring 6-4 defeat to England in their latest fixture.
England held steady in fourth place but gained a significant 33.41 points from their victory over the French squad, bringing their total to 1922.83 points.
Brazil rounded out the top five, climbing one spot to fifth place with 1804.92 points. This upward movement occurred despite the South American giants suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Norway in their most recent match.
