Ryan Reynolds Confirms Another Deadpool Movie Drawing From Comic Deep Cuts

Actor Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that the Merc with a Mouth will return to the big screen, indicating that development is underway on another instalment in the popular Marvel franchise.

Speaking at Fanatics Fest, Reynolds addressed the future of the wisecracking antihero following the box-office success of 2024’s «Deadpool & Wolverine». While Marvel Studios has yet to officially schedule a fourth solo film, the actor shared that future projects will likely explore unadapted material from the character’s extensive print history.

«There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies and from some of the comics,» Reynolds told the audience.

He specifically highlighted acclaimed runs by co-creator Fabian Nicieza and writer Gerry Duggan as key sources of inspiration.

«There’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.»

Shifting dynamics and potential

The confirmation follows earlier remarks from Reynolds regarding a potential structural shift for the franchise. Speaking with NBC’s «Sunday Today», the actor revealed he had begun drafting concepts for Wade Wilson’s return, but questioned whether the character should remain the central focus of a standalone narrative.

«I have some stuff kind of written, but I don’t think I am ever going to centre him again,» Reynolds noted. «He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group.»

Avoiding team membership

Speculation has continually linked the character to upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover events, though Reynolds has previously downplayed the likelihood of a permanent induction into established rosters like the Avengers or the X-Men.

Discussing the character’s narrative boundaries with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds emphasised that keeping Wade Wilson on the periphery is vital to his appeal.

«If he becomes either, we’re at the end,» Reynolds said. «Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humour works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.»
