The 2026 Venice International Film Festival has unveiled a competition lineup anchored by prestige international auteurs, countering a noticeable retreat by major Hollywood studios and a sharp decline in female representation behind the camera.
The 83rd edition of the festival runs from September 2 to September 12 on the Lido. Maggie Gyllenhaal serves as jury president for a competition slate that relies heavily on established global filmmakers.
Key entries vying for the Golden Lion include:
- Danny Boyle opens the festival with «Ink,» a drama exploring media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition of The Sun.
- Martin McDonagh returns to the Lido with «Wild Horse Nine,» a comedic CIA thriller starring John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell and Parker Posey.
- Werner Herzog premieres «Bucking Fastard,» featuring sisters Kate and Rooney Mara.
- Florian Zeller brings his psychological thriller «Bunker,» starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.

Non-fiction programming offers several marathon viewing sessions. Alex Gibney will debut a four-hour documentary on Elon Musk. Luca Guadagnino presents an ambitious seven-hour tribute to Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci. Music fans can anticipate «Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger,» a timely documentary charting the Gallagher brothers’ reunion.
Despite the high-profile auteurs, the 2026 programme highlights a shifting industry landscape. Major U.S. studios are increasingly bypassing European festivals for their autumn releases. Anticipated titles such as David Fincher’s «Cliff Booth,» Aaron Sorkin’s «The Social Reckoning» and Joel Coen’s «Jack of Spades» are notably absent. This reflects a new studio policy that views Venice as a less essential launchpad for domestic commercial success.
The lineup has also drawn immediate scrutiny over its gender disparity. With El-Toukhy as the only female filmmaker in the main competition, this marks the festival’s lowest level of female representation in five years and has sparked renewed debate about systemic inequalities in European festival programming.
