Malaysia Secures 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix For Iconic Sepang Circuit
Formula 1 and the FIA have announced that Malaysia will host the 2026 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit. The event is scheduled to take place from October 2 to October 4 and will slot directly between the Azerbaijan and Singapore races on the motorsport calendar.
This unprecedented relocation results from a collaborative agreement involving Formula 1, the FIA and the governments of both Bahrain and Malaysia. By moving the event to Sepang, organisers successfully preserved a race that would otherwise have been cancelled entirely. The arrangement remains subject to final official sign-offs including formal approval from the World Motor Sport Council. The remainder of the 2026 Formula 1 schedule remains unchanged.
A historic return to Sepang
Sepang made its Formula 1 debut in 1999 and is widely considered one of the sport’s most challenging venues. The track is famous for its unpredictable weather conditions and deeply passionate fanbase. Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali praised the sport’s adaptability and thanked the leadership of both nations for their decisive action.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem echoed these sentiments while emphasising that the safety and wellbeing of all personnel remained the highest priority throughout the complex decision-making process. He also noted that returning the championship to Sepang is a testament to the close relationship shared with the Motorsports Association of Malaysia.
Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa stated that the kingdom is proud to stand as a pillar of stability for Formula 1 amid ongoing regional challenges. He added that the emergency collaboration reflects the enduring commitment Bahrain has to the sport. The Crown Prince expressed sincere appreciation to F1 officials and both the Bahrain and Sepang International Circuits for helping deliver an exciting weekend of racing.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the news on his social media account by sharing photos of himself on the phone with Domenicali and the Crown Prince. Anwar expressed deep appreciation for the trust placed in his country. He noted that hosting the event highlights Malaysia’s capability to stage major international sporting events and visibly strengthens the close partnership between the two nations.
