Apple is orchestrating a substantial push into the smart home ecosystem to recapture market share. The California-based technology firm is finalising an all-new smart home hub, an upgraded Apple TV 4K and a refreshed HomePod mini, according to a recent Bloomberg report.
The upcoming hardware relies entirely on Apple’s redesigned AI-powered Siri. This virtual assistant overhaul, which promises vastly improved conversational abilities and deeper ecosystem integration, has reportedly dictated the release schedule for all three products.
The most significant addition to the lineup is an unreleased smart display category. Designed to compete directly with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub, the tabletop or wall-mounted device will run on the A18 processor. It features a 7-inch square screen alongside a built-in camera that supports advanced facial recognition.
This biometric technology allows the hub to instantly identify individuals approaching the screen to surface their personalised calendars, media preferences and security alerts. Furthermore, the operating system dynamically scales interface elements depending on how far the user is standing from the display. The software itself operates as an entirely new hybrid platform that seamlessly blends tvOS, watchOS and iOS into a unified grid of apps and widgets.
Enhancing Apple TV and HomePod
Beyond the new display hub, existing entertainment devices are receiving substantial internal upgrades specifically designed to support advanced Apple Intelligence features. The next-generation Apple TV 4K will transition from the A15 processor to the A17 Pro. This ensures the set-top box has enough raw processing power to handle complex on-device AI tasks efficiently. It will also incorporate the N1 wireless chip to introduce support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread networking protocols.
Similarly, the HomePod mini will receive its first major hardware update since its initial 2020 debut. The compact smart speaker is shifting to the S9 processor or newer, alongside noticeable improvements to sound quality and an upgraded Ultra Wideband chip. While neither the set-top box nor the smart speaker will feature major exterior design changes, the Apple TV 4K may launch with a redesigned Siri Remote and the HomePod mini is expected to offer an exclusive red colour option.
The updated Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini could hit store shelves as early as September or October. Meanwhile, the flagship smart display hub is targeted for a late 2026 or early 2027 release, contingent entirely on Siri’s final software readiness.
