Javokhir Sindarov takes 2026 FIDE Circuit lead with 75.28 points
A dominant showing at the Naroditsky Memorial in Charlotte, North Carolina, put Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov to the number one position in the ongoing 2026-2027 FIDE Circuit.
Securing dual victories in the United States allowed him to bypass compatriot Nodirbek Abdusattorov before a pivotal stretch of the competitive calendar.
Open division standings and shifts
Sindarov currently boasts 75.28 points across five tournament appearances. This total was enough to displace Abdusattorov, who now occupies second place with 65.64 points.
While Abdusattorov added 9.47 points to his tally after taking second at the Super Rapid and Blitz Croatia, his overall score relies on just four event entries compared to the new leader’s five. American Fabiano Caruana rounds out the open division’s top three, holding steady at 54.58 points.
Further down the rankings, Wesley So collected 7.5 points in Charlotte to lock down fourth place. Haik Martirosyan advanced to sixth overall by earning 12.53 points for a strong runner up effort at the Open International d’Aix-en-Provence.
Alireza Firouzja represents a major late threat. The French grandmaster broke into the top 10 after claiming consecutive titles at the Super Rapid and Blitz Croatia and the Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters. Having participated in only two eligible circuit events so far, he is well-positioned to climb further. Arjun Erigaisi also joined this upper tier following solid results in Chennai and the UzChess Cup – Masters.
Women’s circuit path to candidates 2028
The FIDE Women’s Circuit 2026-2027 operates under similar mechanics but carries massive stakes for world title aspirations. Competitors calculate their final score by summing up their ranking points across a maximum of twelve eligible events.
These qualifiers include the World Rapid and Blitz Championships, Continental competitions and pre-approved standard-play tournaments. Crucially, the top two finishers in this cycle will automatically qualify for the Women’s Candidates Tournament 2028.
July’s Asian Women’s Rapid and Blitz Championships caused very few shifts at the summit of the leaderboard. Bibisara Assaubayeva remains in control of first place with 51.30 points. Zhu Jiner trails in second with 39.83 points while Vaishali Rameshbabu sits in third with 29.70 points.
The FIDE Circuit acts as the official merit-based qualification pathway for international chess. Players accumulate ranking points based on both their final placement and the overall strength of eligible global tournaments. Top performers in the open division earn invitations to exclusive showcase competitions and the broader World Championship cycle, while the highest-placed players in the women’s circuit secure spots in the Women’s Candidates Tournament 2028.
August promises significant movement across both categories. Open section participants must secure a top-three ranking by Sept. 1 to qualify for the Total Chess pilot event, increasing the pressure to perform as the summer draws to a close.
