The shooting happened on Tuesday morning at the junior high school attached to Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City, according to police and university officials.
A preliminary police report said a Grade 9 student brought two firearms onto the campus and shot a male student in Grade 10 before killing himself. University president Ernald Andal said the situation was under control and there was no longer an active threat.
Reuters reported that the university had received no reports of additional fatalities or injuries at the time of its latest update. Students and parents gathered outside the campus as police, soldiers and crime-scene investigators arrived.

Second Philippine school shooting in under two months
The attack comes less than two months after another rare school shooting in Tacloban City, where three students were killed and around 20 people injured in June.
School shootings remain uncommon in the Philippines, where legal gun ownership requires background checks and psychological assessments, although illegal firearms remain widely available. Authorities have not yet publicly established a motive for Tuesday’s attack. The investigation is continuing.
