American performer Michael Wright, who rose to prominence playing volatile frontman Eddie King Jr in Robert Townsend’s 1991 drama «The Five Heartbeats», has died at 70.

News of his death was shared by his wife, Susan Wright, in a social media message. While details surrounding the cause and setting of his passing remain private, she paid tribute to his impact both on and off the camera.

«Michael was a husband, a father… a grandfather, loved one, a friend, and an extraordinary artist whose work touched generations,» his wife wrote in the social media post. «His talent, presence, and contributions to film and television will live on, but to those of us who loved him personally, he was so much more than the roles the world knew him for.»

The family requested space to process their loss, urging well-wishers and journalists to refrain from circulating unconfirmed reports. They noted that public arrangements to honour his memory will be announced in due course.

Four decades of acclaimed performances

Wright’s career spanned more than 40 years across cinema and television. Before finding widespread popularity in «The Five Heartbeats», he earned international critical acclaim for his role in Robert Altman’s 1983 military drama «Streamers», receiving the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival.

His early work included portraying gang leader Clinton in the 1979 cult feature «The Wanderers», followed by co-starring alongside James Belushi in the 1987 action drama «The Principal» and appearing with Wesley Snipes in the 1994 crime film «Sugar Hill».

On television, Wright gained recognition during the 1980s as resistance fighter Elias Taylor in the science fiction saga «V». He later spent three seasons portraying inmate Omar White in HBO’s prison drama «Oz» between 2001 and 2003, subsequently appearing as Lazarus Prime in the superhero series «Black Lightning».

Tributes from across the entertainment sector poured in following the announcement. Co-star Leon Robinson, who shared the screen with Wright in «The Five Heartbeats», publicly offered his condolences, joining fans and colleagues in commemorating his artistic legacy.
