Six Chinese workers die as blaze engulfs Amur gas plant in Russia
Six Chinese citizens lost their lives following a catastrophic fire at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex in Russia’s Far East. The industrial disaster has left a tight-knit community of foreign contractors reeling as rescue operations transition into a grim recovery phase, business daily RBC reports.
Search and rescue teams working through the charred remains of the sprawling site located the bodies of four Chinese contractors during their most recent sweep. This discovery brought the total confirmed death toll to seven, comprising six Chinese nationals and one Russian worker.
All the foreign victims were employees of a third-party contracting organisation involved directly in the construction phases of the petrochemical facility. While authorities have successfully extinguished the main blaze, the nightmare is far from over for the families of nine other Chinese contractors who remain unaccounted for in the wreckage.
Search for survivors
As structural specialists conduct controlled burn-offs of residual technical gases to secure the hazardous area, the operational focus has shifted to forensic recovery and medical triage. The scale of the emergency prompted an enormous regional response with 152 people requiring immediate medical assistance and assessment following the intense inferno.
Of those treated at the scene, 36 individuals sustained injuries severe enough to require hospitalisation in a moderate condition. To manage the immense strain on local healthcare infrastructure, the Russian Emergencies Ministry deployed a specialised Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft to safely evacuate the most critically affected patients to better-equipped regional medical facilities.
Investigators have strictly cordoned off the entire construction site to preserve evidence and determine the exact cause of the blaze.
