One person has been killed and five others injured after shots were fired near a horse racing track in northern Switzerland, police said Sunday.

The shooting happened overnight in Schachen, a district of Aarau located about 46 kilometres west of Zurich, according to Aargau Cantonal Police.

Police said the suspect remained at large and a manhunt was under way. Investigators had not established a motive or determined the precise circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The area around the racecourse, a nearby swimming pool and sports field was sealed off as officers searched for evidence and the suspected attacker. Police urged members of the public to avoid the area.

A large number of officers were also deployed outside Aarau as a precaution, authorities said.

Police appeal for witnesses and recordings

A rave had been scheduled near the racecourse and was due to continue into the early hours of Sunday, although police have not said whether the event was connected to the shooting.

Authorities appealed to witnesses to provide photographs and video recordings made at the scene. Images from Aarau showed a significant police presence, including an armoured vehicle positioned across a road.

Firefighters and police were joined by the regional disaster response unit, known as KKE, according to Swiss broadcaster SRF.

A Swiss Army helicopter was also seen flying over the area during the early morning as authorities continued their search and investigation.
