YouTube personality Mark Fischbach has quietly accumulated a massive 8.5% stake in GoPro, making him the largest individual shareholder of the struggling action camera manufacturer, Bloomberg reports.

The content creator, known online to millions as Markiplier, purchased 13.5mn shares of GoPro Class A common stock. An August 20 filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission revealed the transaction, valuing his investment at approximately $8mn based on recent trading prices. The regulatory document classifies the holding as a passive stake, meaning Fischbach certified he did not acquire the equity to influence or change the control of the business.

This financial move represents a stark shift in the digital creator economy. Rather than securing a traditional brand sponsorship or endorsing a product in a video, the prominent broadcaster is directly buying into a distressed public entity. GoPro shares recently closed at roughly 60 cents, a significant drop from a 52-week high of $3.05.

A company searching for a lifeline

Fischbach’s investment arrives at a critical juncture for the technology company. GoPro announced in May that it had begun reviewing strategic alternatives following unsolicited interest from the consumer, financial and defence sectors. Two days after that disclosure, the firm retained the advisory group Houlihan Lokey to help navigate a potential sale or similar transaction.

GoPro founder and Chief Executive Officer Nicholas Woodman stated during the initial announcement that the business holds substantial unrecognised value. The executive noted this worth could be best realised through a strategic market event.

The brand initially gained global recognition by creating durable equipment that allowed extreme athletes, outdoor enthusiasts and amateur filmmakers to capture otherwise impossible footage. However, the manufacturer has recently grappled with falling demand, mounting debt and expensive restructuring efforts. GoPro continues to report quarterly losses totalling tens of millions of dollars.

While the YouTube star is not actively pushing for board seats or management changes, his position as the primary shareholder alters the dynamic of any impending acquisition talks. If external bidders acquire GoPro at a premium above its current depressed share price, Fischbach stands to secure a substantial return on a heavily discounted asset.
