American envoys touch down in Moscow with a new Ukraine peace plan
American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have landed in Moscow ahead of renewed discussions regarding the conflict in Ukraine. According to Donald Trump, the senior delegation carries a fresh proposal designed to end the prolonged war.
The US representatives are expected to hold direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to outline the updated framework. Following their engagements in the Russian capital, the diplomats are scheduled to travel to Kyiv on Sunday to discuss the terms with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Although neither Washington nor the Kremlin has officially confirmed the delegation’s arrival, international flight tracking data provided evidence of the trip. The open-source data indicated that a US government aircraft touched down in Moscow on Thursday after departing from Helsinki.
Obstacles to a comprehensive settlement
This latest diplomatic push follows a series of previous attempts to broker a peace agreement that ultimately failed to produce a significant breakthrough. Negotiators have consistently struggled to bridge the substantial gap between the two nations and their respective allies.
The primary obstacles to a final agreement remain firmly entrenched. Establishing robust security guarantees for Ukraine and resolving complex territorial disputes continue to act as major stumbling blocks in the negotiation process.
Earlier iterations of the peace plan reportedly included contentious stipulations that sparked fierce debate. These prior frameworks suggested requiring Ukraine to recognise Russian control over the Crimean Peninsula alongside the entire eastern Donbas region. Additional points of friction have centred on overarching demands for Ukraine to significantly reduce the size of its military and permanently prohibit foreign troops from operating within its borders.
Zelenskyy recently noted that a revised version of the US peace framework appeared more favourable after initial consultations. However, key European allies maintain a highly cautious stance. Several European leaders have urged Washington to ensure any final settlement does not disproportionately reward Moscow for its military aggression.
The upcoming meetings in Moscow and Kyiv will serve as a crucial stress test for this revised proposal and determine if a negotiated ceasefire is finally within reach.
