Japanese conveyor-belt sushi operator Kura Sushi abruptly cancelled a promotional tie-in with the popular manga franchise Chiikawa after uncovering employee theft of limited-edition merchandise.

The campaign, originally scheduled to run from August 21 through September 30, ended prematurely on September 6. Kura Sushi launched an internal investigation following customer complaints on social media and the sudden appearance of exclusive collaboration items on secondary marketplaces like Mercari.

Zero chance of winning

The probe confirmed that staff members embezzled capsule toys, cups, acrylic magnets, pin badges and original sushi plates meant for the chain’s «Bikkura Pon» dining game. The arcade-style system rewards diners with a random prize for every five empty plates they return. The removal of winning items meant patrons consumed significant amounts of food with zero statistical chance of receiving a collectible.

Management announced a blanket 10% discount across all domestic restaurants for a two-day period as an apology to affected patrons. The company is actively recalling all remaining promotional inventory and consulting with local police regarding further legal action against the involved personnel.

Investors reacted swiftly to the negative publicity. Following the corporate disclosure, Kura Sushi shares dropped by as much as 3.7% in early Tokyo trading before partially rebounding.

What is Chiikawa?

Chiikawa, a hamster-like character whose name roughly translates to «something small and cute,» has seen a massive surge in cultural relevance since a hit animated feature this summer. The film generated more than 12.2bn yen ($78.2mn) at the domestic box office by late August.

This intense popularity transformed the Kura Sushi collaboration into a highly lucrative target for illicit profiteering, sparking widespread outrage among fans who felt cheated by the rigged restaurant promotions.

A history of promotional disruptions

In August 2025, McDonald’s Japan was forced to suspend a Pokémon Happy Meal promotion after just one day when scalpers swarmed regional outlets for exclusive trading cards.

The fast-food chain experienced similar operational disruptions during its own Chiikawa tie-in earlier that year. The phenomenon is not isolated to the food and beverage industry, but restaurants face unique logistical hurdles when tying physical goods to perishable menu items.

Kura Sushi previously maintained strict internal protocols for handling promotional merchandise, which reportedly required multiple staff members to oversee prize replenishment within locked warehouses. In a public statement, the restaurant chain pledged to enforce strict disciplinary measures and fundamentally overhaul its inventory management to prevent future breaches of consumer trust.
