Aston Martin F1 renews Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll for 2027

Aston Martin Aramco has confirmed its driver pairing for the 2027 Formula 1 season, renewing the contracts of both two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and Canadian driver Lance Stroll.

The announcement ends widespread paddock speculation regarding the future of Alonso. The 45-year-old Spaniard had been weighing a potential retirement following a challenging start to the 2026 campaign.

Aston Martin struggled initially with reliability issues and severe vibrations from its new Honda power unit in the Adrian Newey-designed chassis. However, recent performance upgrades, including a B-spec car introduced in Hungary and an engine update in the Netherlands, appear to have reinvigorated the veteran driver.

By committing to a 24th season in the sport, Alonso extends his record-breaking career and will surpass 450 grand prix starts.

«I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level,» Alonso said in a team statement. «I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed.»

Long-term vision and stability

The retention of Stroll ensures continuity for the Silverstone-based outfit as it navigates the ongoing technical regulations. Stroll, who has driven for the team under its various guises since 2019, emphasised the ongoing development at their British headquarters as a primary motivator for his extension.

«I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team,» Stroll said. «There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me.»

Aston Martin Aramco Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll highlighted the strategic value of maintaining an unchanged driver roster as the organisation targets the front of the grid.

«Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team,» he said. «Having two drivers with their level of experience, commitment and knowledge provides tremendous value to the whole organisation.»

The dual confirmation stabilises the 2027 driver market, effectively closing one of the most desirable manufacturer-backed seats on the grid and shifting focus to the remaining vacancies at Haas and Racing Bulls.
