Storm grounds 130-metre cargo ship Sunny Faith off Kaliningrad coast

A 130-metre cargo ship, Sunny Faith, ran aground off Russia’s Kaliningrad region on October 9 after a powerful storm swept across the Baltic Sea, leaving the vessel stranded just metres from a popular beach.
The Bahamas-flagged ship was approaching Kaliningrad from the Algerian port of Skikda when strong winds pushed it towards the coast near the resort town of Yantarny. Wind gusts reached 27 metres per second as the region was battered by severe weather.
According to Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry, all 19 crew members remained safe aboard the vessel. Authorities reported no structural damage, injuries or oil spills. The ship was travelling without commercial cargo and did not issue a distress signal.
Sunny Faith, built in 2007 and previously known as Beagle II, measures approximately 129.9 metres in length and more than 23 metres in width. It is registered in Nassau, the Bahamas, and operates as a general cargo vessel.
The crew are expected to remain on board until weather conditions allow tugboats to free the vessel. Russia’s North-Western Transport Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into maritime safety and environmental compliance following the grounding.
Stranded ship draws crowds and causes traffic jams

The incident has attracted hundreds of visitors to Yantarny, where the enormous vessel has become an unexpected tourist attraction.
By October 11, heavy traffic had developed around the resort as residents and tourists travelled to photograph Sunny Faith. Local reports indicated that queues of vehicles stretched as far as four kilometres towards neighbouring settlements.
The Yantarny municipal administration issued guidance on how to reach the stranded vessel, directing visitors towards designated parking areas near the beach. Officials also urged people to exercise caution along the coastline.

The storm, associated with Atlantic cyclone Felicia, caused disruption elsewhere in Kaliningrad. Strong winds knocked down trees, blocked roads in the Curonian Spit National Park and damaged coastal infrastructure.
As of October 11, Sunny Faith remained stranded near Yantarny beach. Authorities had not announced a confirmed date for its removal.
